Youth Services

The Youth Services Department believes that a student's success comes from being exposed to multiple behavioral interventions designed to encourage positive interactions with students, staff, and the community.

We are a department dedicated first and foremost to help our San Bernardino students and their families. We help them by providing them with the resources they need in order to achieve success not only academically, but in their everyday lives as well. How do we do this? By focusing on one student at a time! We begin by doing everything in our power to help them succeed by ensuring they not only attend school, but stay in school – Thus our motto is “Get Them In… Keep Them In!”

As we recognize and acknowledge that sometimes a range of different factors and situations affect student attendance and success, we strive to assist our families to overcome those factors and situations in any way possible.

Our families come first. We assist our families by providing them with a number of different resources and aid throughout their students’ academic lives. We have a dedicated team of professionals who take great pride and honor in taking this assistance beyond the office, right to the families’ homes. Beginning with our Director, and following with our Attendance Verifiers, Student Recovery Specialists, Office Staff and Volunteers, all the Youth Services family go above and beyond to meet the needs of our families. And our assistance does not stop with academics. We also provide assistance with their day-to-day needs as much as possible, by referring them to Family Resource and Assistance centers throughout the city of San Bernardino, and by doing what we can to meet their needs whenever possible, even if it is in a small way.

We recognize and acknowledge that we live in a city that has a diverse culture and society, and a wide socio-economic gap between certain sectors of our cities, as well as diverse family structures. The struggles most of our families face is very real and difficult, and we do what we can to minimize the stress of their day-to-day living. Such diversity in so many areas are difficult for our promising young men and women, and this sometimes manifests in them as serious behavioral issues. The first thing to understand is that our department does not see such students as problems. We see them as stones that have been roughened due to the circumstances surrounding them, but who underneath that rough exterior are bright diamonds ready to burst out and shine in all their splendor. And that is our job. To slowly chip away all that rough cover and help them shine for a bright future. Therefore, we take a restorative approach to discipline, rather than punishment, using proven positive methods that have shown great success in improving student behavior and academic success. And we celebrate that success every time one of those former students who have succeeded comes in just to say “Thank you! Thank you for caring”. Because we care. That is what we do. That is Youth Services!
