Program Description
Classes
School for Teaching Academics and Responsibility (STAR) Community Day School is made up of 3 classrooms serving second through sixth grade students. Each class has one teacher, one instructional aide, and a maximum of 15 students. The low student-to-adult ratio allows for intensive academic and behavioral instruction, development of student social skills, and incentives for success. Students enrolled in STAR at Anderson CDS attend a full day program from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Counseling
A school counselor works with groups and individual students twice a week to focus on school social skills. In addition, both parents and students are encouraged (and assisted)to obtain additional outside counseling when needed.
Class Instruction
Academic
All students receive instruction using the same standards-based curriculum as the district's elementary schools. They receive instruction in math, language arts, science, social studies, and physical education. The lower student-to-staff ratio allows for individualized instruction and intervention.
Behavior
Students receive daily behavior instruction to equip them with the social skills necessary to succeed in a general education setting. Students will aslo receive acknowledgement and correction for behaviors displayed throughout the day.
Transportation
A school bus provides transportation for the students enrolled in STAR at Anderson CDS. District personnel will coordinate the student's starting day with the bus arrangements.
