Safety Tips
While Driving
  • Always look inside before entering the car.
  • Lock your doors and roll your windows up all the way when you leave your car.
  • Never pick up hitchhikers.
  • If a stranger approaches while you are in the car, keep your windows rolled up, your door locked, and the engine running.
  • Park in well-lit areas at night.
  • Consider a good vehicle alarm.
    • If you have a vehicle alarm system, use it whenever you leave your car. Even the best system available won't protect your vehicle if you don't use it.
  • Remember, if necessary, honk your horn to attract attention.
  • Keep all valuables out of sight.
    • Place valuables in your trunk before you reach your destination so no one can observe you hiding your belongings.

While Walking
  • Plan your route ahead of time, and never walk alone at night.
  • Arrange to walk with a friend or your dog.
  • Use well-lit streets, not dark alleys or bushy areas.
  • When walking, act calm, confident, and know where you are going.
  • Trust your instincts. If you feel uncomfortable in a place or situation, leave.
  • Be alert! Look over your shoulder occasionally.
  • Never ask for or accept rides from strangers.
  • Avoid displaying or carrying large sums of money.
  • Avoid wearing or displaying valuable jewelry in public.
  • If you must carry a purse, hold it close to your body. Do not dangle it.
  • Don't resist an armed robber.
  • Hand over whatever is demanded quickly and quietly. Your life may depend on it.
