Invitation for Performing Arts Center grand opening

San Bernardino City Unified School District (SBCUSD) is holding a trio of ribbon cutting ceremonies before the month is out to celebrate new facilities and new opportunities for everyone.

The first event is the Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting for the Indian Springs High School (ISHS) Performing Arts Center on Tuesday, September 18 at 4:30 p.m. The school, located at 650 North Del Rosa Drive in San Bernardino, had been holding performances and presentations in the school’s Multi-Use (MU) Room, which serves as the cafeteria but also has a stage and sound system.

The new Performing Arts Center is 18,000 square feet with dressing rooms, a modern orchestra pit, a scene shop, a full fly loft, an art gallery, and seating for 501 people.

The SBCUSD Board of Education members will hold their regular meeting in the facility starting at 5:30 p.m. the same day. The Board of Education has been meeting in the ISHS MU Room while the Board of Education building on F Street is being remodeled. With the opening of the ISHS Performing Arts Center, Board members will meet in the new facility until the Board of Education building reopens.

The International Academy at Pacific High School is holding a ribbon cutting ceremony on Tuesday, September 25 at 9 a.m. by invitation only.

The International Academy is a pilot program specifically designed to address the needs of high school-age newcomers. Newcomers are students who have been in the United States for fewer than two years and who score at the beginning level of English proficiency. While newcomer students may have a range of educational experiences and a variety of family situations, they all share a need to become fluent in English, understand the content taught in science and math classes, and learn about the United States and American culture.

The International Academy provides Pacific High newcomers with instruction in a sheltered environment tailored to their needs. Designated teachers provide English-language arts and U.S. history instruction in English using methods designed to maintain academic standards while reinforcing English skills. Teachers provide science and math instruction in Spanish to assist students in grasping advanced concepts without a language barrier. International Academy students also take physical education classes where they are fully integrated with English-fluent peers.

Also on September 25, but at 11 a.m., the new Welcoming Resource Center will hold its Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting ceremony. The facility has been open and operating for several weeks, but Tuesday, September 25 is the official grand opening for the public. The Center, 781 A West 2nd Street in San Bernardino, provides assistance in enrolling students in elementary school, language assessment, advanced learner assessment, and a variety of other services for students and families in SBCUSD.

If you plan to attend any of these events and require reasonable accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act, please contact the SBCUSD Affirmative Action Office at (909) 381-1122 or mike.medina@sbcusd.com 10 business days in advance.
